CA.08 Vacuum cups

Automation

The suction cup is the easiest and most cost-effective way to treat a component.
There are different designs, materials and sizes.

Different types of suction cups.

  • Oval suction cup
    The oval suction cup series is used for handling elongated products, such as pens, tubes and bottles, and flat or cylindrical objects.
  • With 1 bellows
    The 1-bellows suction cups provide accuracy in gripping the load and accelerate throughput.
    These suction cups are used only for flat surfaces.
  • With 2 bellows
    Suction cups with 2 bellows combine the advantages of flat suction cups (precision and positioning) with the freedom of bellows (angle and flexibility).
    They offer flexibility, precision and low internal volume, suitable for high-speed applications.
  • With 3 bellows
    Suction cups with 3 bellows are recommended for gripping products on different surfaces (large deflection) – replacing spring systems – and for gripping spherical or cylindrical objects at an angle (ball effect).
  • With 2 bellows and foam strip
    Suction cups with foam ring are designed for gripping products with uneven or ridged surfaces, e.g., sawn wood, sheet metal, flat surfaces with bumps or cavities. All grainy surfaces to which suction cups cannot adhere properly and thus cannot be airtight.

The holding force of the suction cups increases proportionally to the difference between the ambient pressure and the pressure inside the suction cup.

The holding force of a suction cup is calculated using the formula:
F = Δp x A
F = holding force
Δp = Difference between ambient and system pressure
A = Effective suction area (the effective area of a suction cup under vacuum).

This means that the holding force is proportional to the pressure difference and the suction surface. The greater the difference between the pressure and the pressure in the suction pad or the greater the effective suction surface, the greater the holding force.
The force may vary depending on a change in the differential pressure and surface parameters.
